Free advice for older people in South Tyneside

Karbon Homes will be one of 25 organisations attending an information day next week to share details about the services and support available to older people living across South Tyneside.

The event, on Monday 2nd October, has been organised by Age Concern Tyneside South (ACTS) and will coincide with the International Day of Older Persons. It will be held at Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre between 11am and 2pm.

The organisations attending aim to support older people, their families and carers with information and advice on planning for winter and how to tackle isolation and loneliness through services that can improve health and wellbeing.

Staff from Karbon Homes will be promoting the ‘Get Online’ project which was launched earlier this year and is being delivered by ACTS. Karbon awarded the project a community grant of £5,900 to deliver six-week digital inclusion programmes so that residents can access the service to help them sustain their tenancies.

The one hour sessions are delivered by experienced facilitators and are ideal for older residents who have little or no IT experience. The residents are taught how to use a computer and the internet safely, online banking, communicating online, shopping and ordering online, and how to access many of the local services and activities that are available across South Tyneside.

We own and manages over 500 properties in South Tyneside that have residents aged 50. We will be promoting the ‘Get Online’ project at the information day as well as encouraging residents to sign up to attend the free project.

Lindsay Porter, Community Involvement Officer at Karbon Homes, said: “The free project has proved to be really popular since we launched it in May this year. Our aim is to help our residents become more digitally included and we hope to encourage even more residents to come along to one of the sessions, which are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.”

Residents who wish to attend the free information day can just turn up anytime between 11am and 2pm. For more information about the ‘Get Online’ project or to book a place, please contact Age Concern Tyneside South on 0191 456 6903.
