We have recently announced plans to invest more than £8 million in the village of Sacriston, with two new developments.
The first of these projects proposes building 19 bungalows on the land between Uphill Drive and Lavender Gardens.
This is previously developed land where there is currently a terrace of 12 garages in place, just four of which have been let in recent years.
We propose demolishing the garages and building a £2.8m development of modern, high quality bungalows for older residents.
A planning application has now been submitted to Durham County Council and the land has been fenced. However we have agreed to leave the gates to the land unlocked for the duration of the school summer holidays to allow children to play there.
Our second project will involve developing 25 new family homes on the site of the existing Graham Court sheltered housing at the junction of Durham Road and Plawsworth Road.
We have been working with the residents of Graham Court to rehouse them in better quality accommodation – in a location of their choice.
Prior to drawing up our plans for development, we talked to officers at Durham County Council, as well as parish and county councillors, to better understand local housing needs.
We are a long term investor in Sacriston, as the landlord of some 573 homes, and we are aware there is a shortage of high quality family homes and bungalows for older residents.
The two projects we’ve just announced follow on from our investment in 24 new family homes on St Cuthbert’s Drive in the village, which are nearing completion.
Lea Smith, development manager for Karbon Homes, said: “All our developments are planned with the community’s housing needs in mind.
“We recognise that new developments can cause concern but we hope that Sacriston residents will welcome improved access to good quality, affordable housing in their local area.”
Karbon Homes is a ‘profit for a purpose’ business, so any revenue we generate from our developments is always re-invested in our homes and services.
In recent years, we have invested more than £5 million in improving our homes in Sacriston including installing new roofs, windows and doors, kitchens and bathrooms, and upgrading electrics.
