After the success of its initial pilot programme, Karbon is delighted to announce the extension of its outdoor activities programme in partnership with WinG (Wayout in Gateshead)
The first phase of the pilot, which ran throughout January, gave 8 Karbon residents the opportunity to engage in a number of outdoor pursuits, including forest/bush craft, gorge walking, kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering, and hill walking.
And thanks to the brilliant feedback from those who took part, the second phase of the pilot scheme is scheduled for May, giving even more Karbon residents the change to get outdoors, learn a new skills and meet new people.
Lindsey Porter, Community Involvement Officer at Karbon Homes, said: “It was brilliant to receive such positive feedback from the first phase pilot scheme.
“The second phase of the pilot programme which is happening in the spring is a fantastic opportunity for even more Karbon residents to get involved, giving them the chance to try a new activity that they might not have done before.”
“I would definitely recommend this to anyone”
Rachel Nettleship is a Karbon customer from Jarrow, and to date has attended three of the five WinG sessions, getting involved in activities such as forest schooling, a 10 mile cycle, indoor climbing, and a walk through Chopwell woods.
Getting involved with the programme was a big step for Rachel, who has been working with Karbon’s Supported Housing Team, recovering from mental health problems as well as PTSD.
Rachel said: This programme helps you overcome your fears as well as pushing your own boundaries and it also gives you a chance to meet new people. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
“From my own personal experience working with Karbon and getting involved in the WinG outdoor activities programme has helped me overcome my anxiety and has improved my confidence as well as my communication skills, which is something I have struggled with in the past”.
How to get involved
The second programme is fully funded by Karbon Homes and is scheduled to run from Saturday 11th May to Saturday 8th June. A number of spaces are available for anyone aged 18 plus living in the Newcastle and Gateshead areas.
All equipment, such as waterproofs, fleeces, and boots, is supplied and WinG have a mini bus which will provide free transport for group members who are able to meet at the designated pick up point (yet to be confirmed).
