Domestic abuse service is saved from closure thanks to support from Karbon Homes

A domestic abuse charity which offers specialist services to victims of domestic abuse across Northumberland will no longer be forced to close thanks to support from Karbon Homes.

Northumberland Domestic Abuse Service (NDAS) has announced it will be able to keep its service running thanks to a £40,000 grant from Karbon Homes and a number of community donations.

Karen Morris, Assistant Director of Customer and Community Engagement at Karbon Homes said: “When we first heard about Northumberland Domestic Abuse Service’s loss of funding, we were really keen to offer our support.

“As an organisation that houses and employs thousands of people across the North East, our teams are in a unique position to identify this often hidden crime, and by working in partnership with regional support services such as NDAS, can make a real difference to the lives of those affected.

“However, if these services were to close, this work would not be possible and many victims of domestic abuse would be at serious risk. NDAS is the only service in Northumberland which offers support and counselling services to children who've lived through domestic abuse, and its closure would have such a negative impact on the community which it supports.

“We look forward to working with the service going forward, building a strong relationship which will bring benefit to our customers as well as members of the wider Northumberland community.”

NDAS was facing closure at the end of March this year because the charity had been unable to secure sufficient funding to replace Big Lottery Funding which ended in August 2018.

After reaching out to Karbon, NDAS were able to secure funding from its ‘Investing in Communities’ grant scheme, whilst also discussing a longer term partnership with the housing association who are looking at what further developments could be made to the way Karbon manages cases of domestic abuse.

Chair of the Board of Trustees for Northumberland Domestic Abuse Service, Jill Mindham-Walker, said: “We are extremely grateful to Karbon Homes for their speedy response to our request for help. Karbon’s generous donation of £40,000 has allowed NDAS to continue its much needed specialist service across Northumberland.

“Karbon has also shown an interest in developing a longer term relationship with NDAS where by our specialist staff will deliver training to their front line employees, equipping them with the skills they need to identify potential cases of abuse within customers’ homes, as well as providing a support service for Karbon customers and colleagues."

The grant will allow NDAS to continue offering lifesaving support to victims of domestic abuse for at least the next 12 months. However they're still on the lookout for a secure means of funding the service indefinitely.

Jill added: “Our team and trustees will continue to work tirelessly to secure long-term funding, and our practitioners will continue to support adults and children affected by abuse in Northumberland."

If you have are experiencing abuse, or have been affected, and would like to speak to someone, you can call NDAS between 9am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday on 01434 608030 and one of the practitioners will be on hand to chat to you. Practitioners offer confidential, non-judgemental, practical and emotional support.
