Ahead of the publication of the Government’s White Paper on Levelling Up, a new report has launched, highlighting how North East housing associations can help the Government deliver its levelling up ambitions.
We, alongside Livin, Beyond Housing, Gentoo and North Star Housing Group, have contributed to the development of the ‘Stay Local, Go Far’ report, which outlines the role housing associations play in levelling up – and the tools they need to do more.
The report calls on the Government to work with local institutions, like housing associations, on levelling up and has been backed by Paul Howell, MP for Sedgefield and co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for ‘left behind’ neighbourhoods.
Paul said: “Community focussed housing associations are anchors of local communities, with deep roots and social purpose that effect incredible change for neighbourhoods. This report clearly defines the ways they can deliver and effectively drive the regeneration of local areas.
“I believe a joined-up approach from central Government is critical to addressing left behind communities and climate change, and using the unique position and experiences of housing associations is key in achieving this.”
The report, produced by PlaceShapers, the national network of place-based housing associations, and Bright Blue Intelligence, outlines policy and funding recommendations for effective place-based regeneration in four key areas, physical, economic, social and democratic regeneration.
Paul Fiddaman, Chief Executive of Karbon Homes and North East board member for PlaceShapers, said: “Housing associations work in all the areas where levelling up needs to take place. We’re deeply connected in these places and passionate about supporting the communities.
“As organisations our work already supports all four dimensions of regeneration, but often we face significant funding challenges and uncertainties. However, if adequate investment and support is provided, housing associations will be in a unique position to help deliver truly effective place-based levelling-up.”
