Karina with her fellow trades apprentices, Marc Cooper, Ryan Robson and Tylar Ford
This National Apprenticeship Week, we're celebrating the success of our new apprenticeship programme.
In October 2019, we welcomed 11 new apprentices to the organisation, providing learning and development opportunities in teams including property services, housing management and central services, such as customer relations, finance and communications.
In line with our vision to help customers lead successful, independent lives, the positions were made available exclusively to those living in Karbon households.
Four months in, one of our Apprentice Electricians, Karina Fletcher, chats about why an apprenticeship was the right route for her, and shares her experience of the role so far.
"I have always wanted a job which required hands on work and liked the idea of gaining a trade which could support me throughout my life. When I saw the job advert for an Apprentice Electrician with Karbon Homes, I jumped at applying. I wanted a challenge and the fact that Karbon is a company with a good reputation in the area made the decision easy.
"An apprenticeship was definitely the right route for me as I was keen to learn the trade whilst on the job. The idea of working and learning alongside others really appealed to me, as did the opportunity to get to know the other tradesmen I would no doubt be working with in the future, and benefit from their years of experience.
"So far, the apprenticeship has proven to be the best decision I could have made for me and my future. Since starting with Karbon I have found my confidence has grown significantly, as has my drive to work hard and develop my new skills.
"The support which I receive, not just from my personal mentor who I work with every day, but also from other colleagues in my team, has been the biggest reassurance to me. I know that if I’m ever struggling with even the smallest of tasks, they’re willing to lend me a hand.
"Completing a task, however small, with minimal help or guidance is really rewarding and each time I do it, it cements that this is the right career path for me. Though I still have a long way to go and lots more to learn, I’m really proud of what I’ve managed to achieve and how well I am doing."
