Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week - Jordan Rainbow

The last apprentice we are profiling as part of National Apprenticeship Week this week is Jordan Rainbow, an apprentice electrician.

Apprentice Jordan Rainbow

Jordan, 22, started working for Derwentside Homes (now part of Karbon Homes) back in September 2014 and is studying a four-year Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Electrical Installation.

After leaving school, he didn't know what career path to choose so he applied to study the Level 2 Electrical course at New College Durham. During his studies, he noticed an advert for an apprentice electrician at Derwentside Homes and was successfully appointed.

He combines his studies with practical learning on-the-job. He attends college one day per week while working within the Asset & Property Services Team four days per week to carry out electrical installation tests within residents' homes.

This involves checking all electrical wiring within the home including sockets, lights, plugs and all other wiring that is connected to the main circuit board. All Karbon Homes properties are required to have an electrical installation test every five years.

Jordan has just sat his last AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2) exam which is a practical performance skills test administered by the National Electrotechnical Training (NET) organisation and is a requirement for those finishing an Electrical Installation Apprenticeship.

His apprenticeship finishes in September but in the meantime, he will continue working towards achieving his technical certificate and needs to complete his NVQ portfolio as evidence to successfully pass his apprenticeship.

He said: "Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to combine your studies with valuable experience in the working environment. I have gained so much experience in the last four years and I am very grateful to Karbon Homes for giving me this opportunity.

"I have been able to learn on-the-job practical skills from qualified electricians within the business which has provided me with a valuable insight into this trade. It has prepared me for a career in electrical installation which is what I'm keen to pursue."
