With around one in three children in the North East living in poverty, Karbon Homes and RE:GEN North East are funding a project that will help ensure safe sleeping for babies and young children in their communities.
The Safe Sleep project from Sunderland children’s charity Love, Amelia supports families in hardship, providing safe sleeping environments for their children. Families are given a pack which includes a brand-new cot bed with a mattress, a gender-neutral bedding pack, a book and a teddy. The cot bed can be used for up to 5 years, depending on the child’s size.
The two-year project will support 100 children, 50 each year, as well as providing parents and carers with guidance and support on safe sleep practices. This will help families feel more confident in creating a safe sleeping environment for their child, while reducing the financial pressure of buying essential sleep items during periods of hardship.
Sarah Jobling, Love, Amelia’s Referrals Coordinator, said: “I see first-hand just how many babies need a safe place to sleep. This funding will enable us to respond quickly to Karbon customers, ensuring babies and young children receive the essential sleep equipment they need without delay. By providing immediate support during times of hardship, together we can help families create a safe sleeping environment when they need it most."

The initiative forms part of Karbon’s overall work to reduce child poverty in the communities it works in, as a member of the North East Housing Partnership (NEHP). One of the key pledges made by NEHP members is to ensure every child in one of their homes has a bed of their own.
