Helping people grow in confidence and lead fulfilling, independent lives
A supported home is a lifeline for thousands of people each year.
At Karbon Homes, we help people across our region to live fulfilling, independent lives. This includes supporting older people to remain independent, helping people on their mental health recovery journey and supporting those with physical disabilities, addiction issues or fleeing domestic violence.
This supported housing provision not only includes our own extra-care and sheltered schemes for over 55s and those with additional needs, but we also have contracts with three local authorities in our region – Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Council – to provide supported accommodation, floating support and crisis response services for people who are referred to us for support.
We do this by working closely with many different partners, including the councils’ Adult Social Care Services, mental health and addiction support workers and charities, such as Depaul, to provide wraparound support to meet each individual’s needs.
We currently provide this highly tailored support for 244 people, delivered by our team of 29 in-house support workers. They do a fantastic job working with individuals to increase their confidence in dealing with life’s challenges. And that support can be life-changing.
Amy told us; "I wasn't doing anything before. I was just hiding all the time. But my support worker has helped me to leave the house and I'm now doing lots of new things – things that I used to be scared of – so I don't feel so trapped anymore".
The team also runs various activities to get people interacting with others, such as a walking group, fishing group, pool and darts group, and a coffee and culture group.
Carla Ambler, Supported Housing Manager at Karbon Homes, said: “Listening to the feedback demonstrates just how much people value the support we provide. It is wonderful to see their journeys and watch them gain independence that they wouldn’t otherwise have had, whilst making social connections along the way.
"Supported housing provides much more than a roof over someone's head. It helps people rebuild their lives, giving them access to the support they need to overcome their barriers and thrive. It plays a vital role in preventing homelessness, reducing pressure on public services and helping people live well in their communities.
“To meet the growing demand, the government must provide long-term funding certainty, giving providers the stability they need to invest in services, and ensure vulnerable people can access the right support when they need it. "
