MP visits new, energy efficient homes near Houghton-le-Spring

Last week we invited Sunderland South MP, Bridget Phillipson, to visit our new completed homes at Redburn View.

The development in Chilton Moor, to the west of Houghton-le-Spring, consists of 45 affordable homes, a mix of bungalows for affordable rent and family homes available for Rent to Buy.

Bridget welcomed these new homes being available through Rent to Buy, which has helped a number of young couples and families, who would have otherwise struggled to take that first step on the property ladder, to make that jump.

The scheme allows customers to rent before they buy and, as rents are set at 20% less than local market rent, this offers the opportunity to save towards a deposit.

Bridget was also impressed by the energy efficiency of the homes, all of which achieve an EPC rating A and are constructed using timber frames, a technique that can reduce the time taken to deliver a development by 25% or more compared to traditional methods.

As well as the speed of build, which also reduces energy use and waste, timber frames are also non-toxic and renewable with the lowest emission levels of any building material, making it one of the most sustainable forms of construction.

The homes also boast additional energy efficiency measures such as solar PV panels, as well as ecological elements such as bat and bird boxes.

Charlotte Carpenter, Executive Director of Growth and Business Development hosted Bridget on the tour, joined by colleagues from our development delivery and sales and marketing teams.

The homes were built by contractor Adderstone Living and part funded through our Strategic Partnership (SP) with Homes England. This SP has provided us with £165m of funding to deliver 2,200 new affordable across the North East and Yorkshire by 2026, nearly half of our overall target for new homes delivery.
