This week (10-17 October 2026) marks National Hate Crime Awareness Week, a national campaign that brings together communities, organisations and public services to raise awareness of hate crime and encourage action against it.
A hate crime is any criminal offence that is motivated by prejudice or hostility towards a person's:
- Disability
- Race or ethnicity
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Transgender identity
Importantly, a hate crime can be recorded even if the offender never openly expresses their prejudice. If the victim, or anyone else, believes an offence was motivated by hostility or prejudice, it can be investigated as a hate crime.
For an incident to be classed as a hate crime, there must be a criminal offence involved, such as assault, criminal damage, harassment or theft.
Where behaviour is offensive or hurtful but does not amount to a criminal offence, such as abusive comments or gestures, it may be recorded as a hate incident.
Investigators will consider all available evidence to determine whether prejudice or hostility towards one of the protected characteristics played a part in the incident.
Our approach to hate crime
At Karbon, we're committed to helping our customers feel safe, respected and supported in their homes and communities.
We do not tolerate hate crime, harassment or discrimination in any form.
We work closely with customers, partner organisations and local agencies to prevent hate-related incidents, raise awareness and take action when concerns are reported. Through education, support and partnership working, we aim to build inclusive neighbourhoods where everyone feels welcome.
We also use the powers and resources available to take appropriate action against perpetrators, while ensuring victims receive the support they need.
How to report hate crime
If you believe a hate crime has taken place, it should be reported to the police:
- 999 in an emergency
- 101 for non-emergency situations
