Plans proposed for conversion of West Wylam methodist chapel into much-needed housing

Plans have been revealed to give a former 19th century methodist chapel and recognised community landmark a new lease of life, providing much-needed affordable housing in West Wylam. 

Prudhoe Community Partnership and Karbon Homes have outlined proposals for a community-led development which will turn Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in West Wylam into five affordable apartments. The two organisations will work together to bring the development forward. 

Vince Walsh, Development Manager at Karbon Homes, said: “We’re excited to be sharing our proposals for this community-led development, working closely with Prudhoe Community Partnership and other key partners to ensure the project brings long-lasting benefits to the local community.

Caroline Warburton, Chair of Prudhoe Community Partnership, said: “Not only are we bringing the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel back in to use, a heritage landmark that has sadly stood empty for a number of years, but we’re also developing much-needed affordable homes in the town. It’s a real win-win for West Wylam.” 

The proposal outlines plans for four two-bed flats and one one-bed flat suitable for a wheelchair user. All five flats will be managed by Karbon Homes and available for affordable rent. 

The conversion would see the structure and external façade of the chapel preserved to protect its heritage. An extension will be attached on the west side of the chapel, the design of which will be in-keeping with the look of the existing structure and will be built using similar materials. 

The development of the flats will be supported by funding from Homes England, through Karbon’s strategic partnership with the government’s housing delivery agency. 

Karbon will be carrying out a community consultation to collect the views of local residents on the proposed plans. There will be opportunities to leave feedback online here or in person.  

The plans will be on display at The Hub, 61 Front Street, from the 6 to 10 March, 10am till 4pm plus Tuesday 7 March between 6pm and 8pm and Saturday 11 March between 10am and 12pm
