If your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking, then Smoke Free County Durham’s Stop Smoking Clinic is here to help.
The clinic offers free, friendly and non-judgmental support to anyone ready to quit tobacco for good.
Earn up to £120 for taking part
Adults living in social housing who take part can earn up to £120 for quitting smoking. This will be in the form of vouchers, increasing in amounts as you progress through the quit journey.
What are the benefits?
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health - and the benefits start almost immediately.
- Just eight hours after your last cigarette, oxygen levels in your blood return to normal and harmful carbon monoxide is reduced by half.
- Within 24 hours, carbon monoxide is fully eliminated from your body and your lungs begin to clear out mucus.
- After 48 hours, your senses of taste and smell start to noticeably improve.
- By 72 hours, breathing becomes easier as the bronchial tubes in your lungs begin to relax.
- Between two and twelve weeks, your circulation improves significantly, making physical activity easier and more enjoyable.
- After three to nine months, lung function can improve by up to 10%, with fewer coughs, less wheezing, and better overall respiratory health.
- After just one year, your risk of heart disease is cut in half compared to someone who continues to smoke.
The cost of cigarettes adds up quickly too, and most people are surprised at just how much they’re spending without realising it. If you smoke a pack a day, you could be spending over £80 a week - that’s more than £4,000 a year. Imagine what you could do with that money instead: a holiday, savings for your family, home improvements, or simply less financial stress. Every cigarette you don’t smoke is money back in your pocket.
The truth is, the benefits of quitting start from the moment you stop - and they only grow with time. There’s no better time to start than now. Take that first step today - your future self will thank you. We understand that quitting isn’t easy, which is why we’re here for you every step of the way until you’re successfully smokefree.
