Celebrating 10 years of Silver Talk volunteers during Volunteers’ Week

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re proud to celebrate a special milestone. 8 Silver Talk volunteers are marking 10 years of dedicated support, helping to reduce loneliness across our communities. We’re also recognising a further 32 volunteers who have given more than five years of service.

Silver Talk is our telephone befriending service that helps reduce loneliness and social isolation by connecting people with trained volunteers for regular, friendly weekly chats. For the people who use the service, those calls can provide reassurance, connection and something to look forward to each week.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, which takes place from 1 to 7 June, the Silver Talk Team invited long serving volunteers for afternoon tea at St Cuthbert's Close, one of our supported housing schemes in Hexham, where we celebrated their dedication to the service. A second event will take place in July at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Stanley on Friday 3 July.

One of the volunteers we’re paying tribute to is Joan who started helping with the service in 2015. Joan said: “Being part of Silver Talk for the last 10 years has been amazing. It’s nice to have a regular chats with different people and create new friendships. I find it really uplifting and rewarding.”

Christine Fletcher, Silver Talk Coordinator said: "I love working with the Silver Talk volunteers  - they are the unsung heroes. They develop strong bonds of friendship with those they call. I see friendships develop and volunteers bloom. It plays a great role in supporting older people across the region.

“Volunteers Week is a great opportunity to celebrate these wonderful people, remind them of the impact they have, show them how much they mean to us and enjoy some nice food and a cuppa too.”

Volunteers’ Week is a chance to recognise the people who give their time to support others. For us, it’s also an opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to the Silver Talk volunteers whose kindness and commitment continue to make a lasting impact.

Become a Silver Talk Volunteer

If you’re interested in becoming a Silver Talk volunteer, we’d love to hear from you.

Silver Talk helps reduce loneliness and isolation, making a real difference simply through conversation and connection.

Volunteers work from home and receive full support from the Silver Talk Team during office hours. There are also opportunities to meet other volunteers through training sessions and social activities.

We can provide a basic mobile phone for Silver Talk calls, or if you have your own smartphone, you can make calls via our Silver Talk app.

We only ask that you commit a few hours a week, and the benefits of becoming a volunteer are incredibly rewarding, and your calls will make a real difference to someone’s wellbeing.
