Karbon branches out with new tree management software

Karbon is sprucing up its approach to the management of its tree stock across the North East with the introduction of the Ezytreev tree management software.

The software will ensure Karbon has comprehensive data on every tree on or within 15 metres of land it owns or manages, covering everything from the overall condition and heath of the trees to their environmental impact and amenity value.

Will Rickerby MSc Arb, FArborA, Grounds Maintenance Team Leader at Karbon Homes, said: “Up until now we’ve taken a more reactive approach to tree management, dealing with any issues or concerns raised by customers and stakeholders on a case-by-case basis.

“Using Ezytreev will turn this approach on its head, ensuring we’re more proactive when it comes to tree management, building our understanding of the trees we have growing on our land and helping us to identify potential issues ahead of time, giving customers that peace of mind that the trees affecting them are well managed.”

Following the roll out of full stock condition surveys and inspections over the coming months, carried out by tree specialists Dryad, Ezytreev will capture all the data in one place and generate a profile of any proactive tree works needed.

Rob Taylor, Ezytreev Product Manager, reflected on how the partnership supports Karbon Homes’ strategic goals: “Partnering with Karbon Homes is exciting as it takes a proactive approach to tree management. We’re proud to support its mission to manage risks effectively, putting residents’ safety and a sustainable environment at the heart of everything it does.”

Each tree will be assigned a priority and from that a calendar of future inspections will be created, to ensure any risk is managed and data is kept up to date.

As well as a picture on condition and health, based on size and location the software will also assign each tree an environment value, based on its Co2 capture.

This will help build a better understanding of the environmental impact of the tree stock and calculate a more accurate figure on Karbon’s carbon footprint.

Using the same data, the software will also calculate an amenity value for each tree. Points are given under a number of different factors, such as size, life expectancy, suitability to its setting etc. It is then possible to attach a monetary value to the points score.

These amenity values are particularly helpful in criminal damage cases, where trees are felled or lopped on Karbon land without permission.

Will added: “We're committed to playing our part in creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. Proactive, data driven tree management will not only enhance the long-term viability and value to the community of our tree stock but will play a crucial role in boosting biodiversity.”
