Karbon Homes and Adderstone Foundation fund North Shields street art mural

A vibrant new mural is helping to revitalise the heart of North Shields, thanks to a partnership between ourselves and our construction partner Adderstone Living.

The artwork, which is painted on the gable end of the prominent Wooden Deli coffee shop on Norfolk Street, just steps away from our affordable housing development Laurel Cove, is part of the Elevation public art initiative, which marks the 800th anniversary of North Shields by transforming public spaces through large-scale mural artworks.

We have part funded the delivery of the mural from our Unlocking Social Value programme, which matches the social value commitments of our contractors and suppliers with projects and initiatives that benefit our communities.

The remaining funding has come from the Adderstone Foundation, the charitable arm of Adderstone Group which is the lead contractor for the Laurel Cove development.

Jessica Alexander, Social Value Coordinator at Karbon Homes, said: “Art plays an important role in not only brightening up communities but helping to tell their unique stories. When we heard about the Elevation public art initiative and saw there was an opportunity to bring a piece of art to a gable end so close to the new homes we’re building, it was a no brainer.

“It’s been great to see Adderstone get behind this project with us. We’re proud to work with colleagues who share our commitment to supporting local communities.”

The Elevation initiative, led by a local charity of the same name, aims to inject colour, creativity, and pride into North Shields during its landmark year. Following consultation with residents, the community expressed a strong preference for a nature-inspired design.

Dutch muralist Nina Valkhoff, known for her vibrant depictions of the natural world in motion, was commissioned for its delivery. Her artwork will reflect the natural beauty of the area and the energy of the town’s regeneration.

Stephen McCoy, Director of Adderstone Living, added: "Our affordable housing development at Laurel Cove is not just about building houses but also about helping to create a place where people really feel at home. This mural project reflects our commitment to supporting the area’s ongoing growth, and we're looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have.

"It’s a real pleasure to be involved in this project with Karbon Homes- it’s an excellent way to celebrate the character and identity of the local community.”

The completed mural stands as a colourful landmark in North Shields’ 800th anniversary celebrations and a lasting symbol of creativity, collaboration, and community pride. The murals are designed to boost the town’s visual identity, increase footfall, enhance community pride, and support wellbeing through local engagement.
