Karbon Homes’ Winter Wellbeing Fund returns to support communities facing cost of living pressures

Karbon Homes has announced the return of its Winter Wellbeing Fund, an initiative aimed at supporting community groups and charities helping residents navigate the ongoing cost of living crisis.

With grants of up to £2,000 available, the fund is designed to empower local organisations that provide essential services such as food, hygiene products and basic household supplies. The initiative is part of Karbon’s broader Community Investment Fund and is specifically targeted at groups operating in areas with a high concentration of Karbon residents and significant need.

“As the cost of living remains high, more and more residents across our communities are having to make stark decisions between heating their homes and buying food and household essentials,” said Paul Moralee, Community Investment Manager at Karbon Homes. “We want to do what we can to help as many local groups and charities as possible to continue providing vital support.”

The fund supports a wide range of expenses, including:

  • Food provision where donations have declined

  • Fuel costs for delivery of hygiene provision

  • Volunteer expenses

  • Equipment for community meals

  • Hygiene and cleaning products

  • Supporting costs of lunch clubs and community meal provision

One of the previous beneficiaries, Walking with the Wounded, used the grant to support veterans and their families in North Shields with food vouchers and wellbeing advice. “With the ongoing cost of living crisis, veterans have been forced to make difficult financial decisions and choose between heating and eating,” said Jennifer Bone of Walking with the Wounded. “The grant from Karbon Homes helped us to alleviate some of this need and has enabled us to purchase emergency food shops and vouchers.”

One of the veterans who was able to benefit from the support was Jon (name changed to protect identity). Jon was sleeping on the sofa of a local drug dealer and was in an extremely precarious position. Jennifer and team were able to support him by finding him somewhere secure to live, food and ongoing support:

“We were able to get Jon settled into a new property with credit on his utility meters and food in his cupboards. We wouldn't have been able to achieve this without the support of the Winter Wellbeing Fund. Jon is now accessing veterans' football and we’ve supplied him with clothes and hygiene products which will help him to become less socially isolated.”

The current funding round closes on October 31, with decisions announced by mid-November. The fund is sponsored by CEF Electrical through Karbon’s Unlocking Social Value programme.
