Karbon residents in Wallsend are set to enjoy the summer after major works to the retaining wall at the end of their back gardens has alleviated ongoing flooding issues.
19 households on Armstrong Road have benefitted from the investment works, with many commenting on how nice their reinstated gardens are and overall how happy they were with Karbon and the onsite team from Sendrig Construction (principal contractor).
The retaining wall is 148 metres in length with an average height of just over 4 metres. Over 3,560 concrete giant ‘jenga blocks’ weighing between 90 and 104 kilogrammes each were placed and filled with over 2,200 tonnes of stone.
The project took twelve months to complete, largely due to the fact it took place over what turned out to be one of the wettest winters on record, but continuous customer engagement meant residents were kept informed and disruption was kept to a minimum where possible.

On completion we made sure all the gardens were reinstated to a high standard, each provided with a new shed/storage and many fully paved rather than turfed on residents’ request.
One resident told us “I’d had lots of issues around flooding in my rear garden over the last few years and I’m happy this problem is now sorted. Even though 2 metres of garden has been taken away, the area looks and feels larger than before somehow.
“I am happy overall with the work completed. I have more storage than I had previously, and I don’t mind the look of the new wall – it is quite neat. It’s higher than before so I feel more secure. I am looking forward to getting my garden furniture out and putting my stamp on the garden.
“The team doing the work were a great bunch of people who had to work in some very poor weather conditions. They were polite and respectful of my home and kept me informed of what was going on throughout. If I had any issues they were sorted straight away.”
The project was delivered by Karbon’s Property Services Quantity Surveying Team who provided Cost and Project Management services throughout.
