Our latest regeneration programme at Ferndale Court, Consett, has made significant improvements to communal areas and 31 flats offering independent living to residents over 55.
Karbon's recent investment work has included a full electric rewire, boasting new communal lighting with corridor sensors. LED strip lighting in kitchens, circular lights in bathrooms and replaced extractor fans are all enhancements made across the scheme.
Heating now operates digitally, with water heaters upgraded from traditional Elson tanks to Sunamp Thermino units which use phase change technology to deliver compact, energy-efficient, low-maintenance hot water on demand.
Marie Breen, the first ever customer to move into Ferndale Court in 2000, said, “I love my new kitchen, it’s lovely. I’m very comfortable and happy here at Ferndale, there’s a great mix of independent living with socialising when you want it.
“I’ve lived here for 25 years now, and I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Kitchens have been modernised with new units, offering a choice of different designs for everything from worktops to the handles. Lever mix taps were installed to improve ease of use for customers, whilst new wood FX vinyl flooring provides stylish slip-resistance.
Deborah Kennedy, Karbon Homes Scheme Coordinator at Ferndale Court, explains, “Every customer had different style choices to suit their preferences in their individual flats and each flat took roughly only 10 days to complete.
“The guest room, launderette, hairdressers and a quiet room have all also been refurbished. Customers are thrilled with the end result.”

Customers opted for either a standard bathroom or wet room, both featuring anti-slip flooring. Bathrooms have been equipped with fittings, including grab rails and drop-down seats, tailored to everyone’s personal needs. Aqua walls replaced dated tiling in shower areas and new digital touch screed towel rails adhere to new regulations.
New communal carpets, window blinds, suspended ceilings and redecoration throughout the supported housing scheme have added finishing touches, enabling customers to further enjoy their social events together.
