Tackling climate change together

In response to the ongoing climate change challenge we aim to be a responsible, ‘climate canny’ landlord taking action to create warmer homes, greener neighbourhoods and a more sustainable future.

Our new Environmental Strategic Plan outlines how we’re taking action to make homes more energy efficient, protect our customers and communities against climate impacts, and reduce our environmental footprint. The plan details the ways in which, as a landlord and employer, we can minimise our impact and, wherever possible, create positive change.

We strive to be a progressive business where environmental considerations are embedded in our decision-making, ensuring we act in the best interests of our customers, our people and the environment.

Our approach focuses on three key areas, outlined below, all while working towards net zero carbon by 2050.

Homes & Communities
- We’re improving homes to make them warmer, more energy efficient and more affordable to run. This includes upgrading existing homes, building new low‑carbon homes, and focusing first on the properties that need the most improvement.
- We’re also protecting homes from climate risks like flooding and overheating, and investing in greener spaces that support health and wellbeing.

Resource Use
- We’re reducing waste, using more sustainable materials and managing water more efficiently across our homes and services.
- By reusing, recycling and working with responsible suppliers, we’re cutting pollution and reducing our environmental impact.

Sustainable Travel
- We’re reducing emissions and supporting greener ways to travel.
- This includes moving to electric vehicles and making it easier to cycle or use public transport, alongside introducing features like EV charging in new homes.

What this means for our customers

Customers will benefit from lower energy bills, warmer and more comfortable homes, and safer properties that are better protected from climate risks. Cleaner, greener neighbourhoods, more sustainable improvements to your home, and better access to greener travel options will all help create a healthier environment for everyone.

To ensure customer perspectives were considered, input by our Customer Environment Group was sought during the development of this plan. We’ll continue involving customers to shape our approach by inviting feedback on our environmental journey to deliver real benefits for our communities and we’ll continue to share our progress so you can see the difference we’re making.

Our environmental performance is measured and reported annually through the SHIFT Sustainability Standard, an annual sustainability assessment which benchmarks performance against other housing providers. We’ve set clear targets, including improving the energy efficiency of homes by 2030 and review our targets annually and update these to reflect the latest legislative and policy changes where necessary.
