Stanley Front Street will turn into a sea of bright colours and the smells and tastes of world cuisines will get tastebuds tingling at the next street food market.
Visitors are invited to wear a/their team’s colours at our World Cup football-themed street food market this month, which we are sponsoring and is being organised by food market specialists Baccanalia.
Whether you’re wearing the all-white of England, night sky navy blue of Scotland or the world-famous yellow canary colours of Brazil, you can join in with the celebrations on Friday 12 June at Stanley Front Street running from 3pm to 7.30pm.
Each street food vendor will be displaying flags from their food’s country of origin with an explanation of the delicious food on offer.
And if the incredible street food, sweet treats, face painting, football kit colouring in competition, entertainment and atmosphere isn’t enough to whet your appetite, the Fans Museum Sunderland will be displaying a collection of football shirts, medals and other football memorabilia, including the FA Cup Trophy and Women's Premier League Trophy. Crowds will also be entertained by the Craghead Colliery Band, who will perform marches as well as some pop and football themed songs between 6pm-7pm.
Stanley-based arts organisation The Forge has arranged for the Bread and Butter Theatre Company to send their ‘firm, but fair’ referees for an afternoon who will entertain you with all your favourite football tunes and moves. Also attending will be Beamish Museum who are bringing a 1942 bus along with football related objects and activities, and there will also be a competition to win a kid’s party at NUCASTLE, courtesy of the Newcastle United Foundation.
As part of our place shaping mission in Stanley to help deliver positive change, where we own and manage one in four homes, we are keen to see the town centre regenerate and thrive for the benefit of the town’s residents.
Victoria Keen, our Head of Place, Partnerships and Engagement, said: “With the World Cup kicking off the day before the market, we wanted to get into the spirit of things and bring the whole community together, regardless of which team you support, to have a football-themed street market.
“With all the flags and colourful football strips of the world, we hope to turn Stanley Front Street into a sea of vibrant colours with unique tastes and smells of food from around the world for visitors to sample, explore and enjoy.
“The markets, which have received funding from the North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, have received overwhelming support with around 11,700 visitors joining us across all the markets held so far, and the feedback has been fantastic. But we want to keep improving and creating an experience for visitors to enjoy. With the recent warm, sunny weather and a football-themed event, there is something for everyone.
“Thanks to Karbon’s Community Investment Fund, we are delighted to welcome Craghead Colliery Brass Band to perform on the evening and I’m looking forward to seeing as many people there as possible.”
The markets are part of Baccanalia’s Street Food Carousel, a county-wide programme of Street Food events. Alongside working with well-established food vendors, Baccanalia also supports local organisations and businesses to become street vendors and to improve their offers.
Thomas Wales, Director of Baccanalia, said: “Street Food Carousel is really building momentum in Stanley, and the response from local people so far has been brilliant. The markets are designed to bring people into town centres, support independent traders and create a regular reason for communities to come together.
“This World Cup-themed market is a great example of how we want the programme to keep developing. It is not just about bringing street food into a town centre, it is about creating atmosphere, activity and shared moments that feel relevant to the place and the people who live there.
“Working with Karbon Homes, The Forge, Beamish Museum, Fans Museum Sunderland and other partners has allowed us to add something extra to this market and build a fuller experience for visitors. We are really pleased with how the Stanley programme is progressing and are looking forward to seeing Front Street full of colour, food, music and community spirit again.”
The dates for the remaining two Friday markets this year will be held on 14 August and 9 October 2026.
