Thirsk and Malton MP commends the development of new affordable homes

The completion of 64 new affordable homes in the village of Sowerby, near Thirsk, has been welcomed by the local MP, providing much-needed affordable options for local residents.

Kevin Hollinrake MP visited the new homes off Back Lane with colleagues from our development team and our construction partner T Manners & Sons.

Kevin commended the design of the development, with a mix of both homes for rent and homes available under affordable home ownership schemes Rent to Buy and Shared Ownership, designed to help those wanting to take their first step on the property ladder.

Kevin said: “As former Shadow Housing Minister, I understand the critical importance of increasing the supply of high-quality, affordable homes to support communities like Sowerby.

“This development by Karbon Homes, with its thoughtful mix of rental and ownership options, exemplifies empowering individuals through homeownership while ensuring sustainable, community-focused growth.”

The new homes consist of a mix of bungalows and two, three and four-bed family houses. With support from Leeds-based QAD Architects, the homes have been designed with traditional architectural styles and local detailing, ensuring that the development complements the character of the nearby conservation area.

Paul Fiddaman, Chief Executive of the Karbon Group, said: “These new homes at Sowerby are a real success story in our ongoing programme to deliver more affordable homes in communities where affordability can be a challenge for local residents.

“At planning stage, we were keen to design a development that meets the needs of the local community, outlining a mix of property types and sizes to provide options for residents at varying stages of life, and that’s what we’ve managed to achieve. It’s a proud moment to see them completed and we hope the new residents will be really happy here.”

Local resident Julia Graham secured one of the two-bed bungalows on the new development, a move that has given her complete peace of mind when it comes to her home and future.

Julia said: “It’s unusual to see bungalows being built on new developments, especially ones available for affordable rent, so when I saw that Karbon Homes were building some in Sowerby I knew I needed to try and get one while I can.

“For the first time in a long time I have complete peace of mind when it comes to my home and the future. Your home is everything after all and I’m really happy, it’s wonderful.

“I know I want to live my life out here and the bungalow is set up perfectly for that. And the fact it’s social housing with a landlord like Karbon Homes, gives me security that it really is mine for as long as I can stay here.”

The development is part-funded through our strategic partnership with Homes England, to develop 2,324 much-needed affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire.

All 64 new homes will be managed long term by 54North Homes, a Yorkshire based subsidiary of the Karbon Group.
