Karbon's skills hub in Stanley, North Durham that offers skills, training and employability support, has been praised by local MPs for helping residents to reach their potential.
Kevan Jones MP for North Durham and Bridget Phillipson MP for Houghton and Sunderland South and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, visited Karbon Homes’ Skills Hub on Stanley Front Street to see how we're helping local people to learn new skills, gain qualifications and get back into work.
Bridget Phillipson MP said: "Labour will put lifelong learning and skills at the heart of our plan to grow the economy.
"That's why hubs like this are crucial, allowing local people in north Durham to learn new skills and open up new employment opportunities across our region.
The Stanley Skills Hub first opened in spring 2021, bringing a host of services such as digital skills, coaching, literacy and numeracy tuition, wellbeing support and employment advice, all under one roof.
Support services like this are key in helping tackle the North East’s unemployment rate, which sits at a record low of 4.2%.
Philip Pollard, Assistant Director of Customer and Community Engagement at Karbon Homes said: “We’re incredibly proud of our skills hub in Stanley and it's been great to receive such positive feedback from both MPs on the support we’re offering.
“The aim of the hub is to help people to break down some of the barriers they face when re-entering the employment market, helping build their skills and confidence. It’s become a real asset of community value and has helped improve the lives of those who have accessed its services.”
According to data from the Learning and Work Institute and Institute for Employment Studies, in 2022 just over half of working-age social housing customers were in work compared to 80% of those owning homes and 75% of those in the private rented sector.
Kevan Jones MP added: “I really enjoyed my visit to the skills hub in Stanley. It is great to see the support that Karbon Homes is providing to my constituents across North Durham.”
Kevan and Bridget were joined on the visit by Lynsey Sweeney Managing Director of Communities that Work, the national body for social landlords that support people into rewarding, sustainable employment.
Lynsey said: “The great services and the high-quality support available at Karbon’s Skills Hub in Stanley are exactly what communities need – up and down the country – to support more people into work.
“With more jobs available than people ready to fill them, we must support everybody who wants to work into work, and this requires ongoing and expert support just like that in Stanley. We urge the government to work with all social housing providers so that every high street has a skills hub like Stanley.”
