We have recently upgraded our telecare network to improve the support we provide for customers who are elderly or have additional needs, helping them to live safely and independently at home.
The term ‘Telecare’ refers to technology‑based services—such as alarms and remote monitoring systems - that can be used to alert carers or a monitoring centre in the event that someone needs help: such as if they’ve had a fall.
Karbon owns and manages 43 extra care schemes and has around 1,600 customers connected to the telecare system. There were previously a number of different systems and equipment in operation, many of which relied on out-of-date analogue technology.
Paul Wailes, Supported Housing Manager at Karbon Homes, explains: “We recognised the need to upgrade our legacy telecare systems to a fully digital network that would be both flexible and future-proof, and most importantly, would improve the speed and reliability of our response to customers.
We have worked in partnership with technology specialists, Secureshield, to plan and install the new system, bringing in expertise from housing teams, installers, alarm receiving centres and equipment manufacturers.
The transformation to a fully digital and integrated system is now almost complete, and our customers are already seeing the benefits. For example, we can now remotely detect units that are offline or have low signal, leading to proactive maintenance before the issues affect customers.
Helen lives in one of our Extra Care schemes: “The telecare system has been a lifeline to me as I have experienced an increasing number of falls. Knowing that support is available at the press of a button gives me reassurance and, most importantly, the confidence to continue living independently. Without the system, my life would be very different and incredibly difficult.”
Helen's experience demonstrates the wider purpose behind the transformation. While the programme has involved significant investment in infrastructure, connectivity and technology, its ultimate purpose is to provide residents with a reliable service that supports independence, confidence and quality of life.
