Karbon in the running in the North East Property Awards

Our Athol House development in Ponteland has been selected as a finalist in the North East Property Awards. Held annually, the awards recognise achievements across the region’s property sector and Karbon’s Athol House has been shortlisted in the ‘Residential Development of the Year’ category.

The £8.4million retirement living scheme, completed in July 2025, provides 34 one and two-bedroom apartments for over 55s in the ever-popular area of Ponteland. These affordable and energy efficient homes have been carefully designed to meet the needs of modern living, including air-source heat pumps for low-carbon heating and indoor and outdoor communal spaces to encourage social interaction between residents.

The scheme is a redevelopment of the previous Athol House site where the small bedsit flats had become outdated, and the building had experienced flood damage from the nearby River Pont.

We have created a fantastic scheme, and we are delighted that the judges agree. Designed by JDDK Architects and built by Equans, the new building reflects the semi-rural character of the surrounding area. Working with the Environment Agency, we have ensured that the new, elevated scheme meets flood risk requirements and have retained mature trees and hedgerows from the original scheme whilst adding a new communal garden.

We liaised closely with our existing residents throughout the process, and although they had to temporarily move into alternative homes, they were given first priority for the new apartments. Jean Scott, one of the original Athol House residents who has since moved back in, told us: “I remember driving past the site to see the building start to take shape, and I couldn’t get my head around the change. It’s completely transformed the area and the building looks gorgeous.

“I’ve got a lovely corner plot on the ground floor and because the building is raised up, I have a lovely balcony which will be amazing in the summer. I can look out of the window at the beautiful landscaping and watch the world go by. I love it and I’m so glad to be back home.”

The final results of the North East Property Awards will be announced on 7 May.
