We have deep roots in the town of Stanley, County Durham.
Karbon owns and manages one in four homes there, and we are committed to doing all we can to help the town and its people to thrive.
In November 2024, we launched our Thriving Stanley Action Plan, after many years of working closely with the community. The plan outlined our ambitions to help regenerate the town and improve the lives of residents.
Ongoing consultation with residents and partners was key to this. We now have 140 representatives from over 50 local organisations on our Stakeholder Reference Group, and the group continues to grow.
Over the past year, we’ve worked with these partners on various projects, and our actions are starting to have real impact. The newly published Thriving Stanley Impact Report. brings all of this work together in one place, providing an update for residents and stakeholders on our progress to date, as well as our exciting plans for the future.
Our Stanley Action Plan has three strategic aims: Homes, CustomersandPlace. We have made real progress in each of these areas already. Here are just a few highlights.
Homes
Over the past two years, we’ve invested over £12 million in our homes in Stanley, including over 400 new kitchens and nearly 500 roofs.
We’ve also invested in improving the energy efficiency of our homes, installing solar panels to help reduce carbon emissions and customers’ bills.
We are helping to build more affordable housing, which includes developing a proposal for 34 new homes at Craghead, South Stanley.
Customers
Our dedicated Community Investment Team has distributed over £80,000 in grants to community groups and projects across Stanley over the past three years.
Beneficiary projects include the Burnside Family Centre, which has set up a wellbeing café in one of the most deprived areas of South Stanley, and PACT House Presents for Parents where our contributions have helped support families over the Christmas period.
Volunteers for our befriending services, Silver Talk and Silver Friends, have been making calls and visits to older and vulnerable people to help tackle levels of loneliness and isolation. In 2025 the team made over 1,300 calls, and arranged regular meet ups, including coffee mornings in Annfield Plain and Towneley Court.
Place
With a key aim being to revitalise and bring footfall back to Front Street (the local high street), we’re working with the local council to bring empty shop units back into use. One project saw us join up with Stanley-based arts organisation, The Forge, to commission attractive shutter artwork for shop fronts.
We’ve helped host a series of street food markets, in tandem with partners and local traders. The six markets held in 2025 and the start of 2026 have attracted over 10,800 visitors to Front Street and provided a real boost for local businesses.
In 2023 we purchased the former board school site which had stood empty for over a decade and was in a state of disrepair. We’ve now cleared the site and are exploring options for its future. The hoardings display photos taken by local school children on the theme of ‘a child’s eye view of home’.
Looking forward
We’re proud of the impact that we’ve had in Stanley and look forward to building on these strong foundations to deliver lots more over the coming years.
This progress would not have been possible without the commitment of our partners, and we are delighted to see many more organisations getting involved and extending the remit of what we can do.
