Unlocking the value of apprenticeships

Our Unlocking Social Value programme is one of the ways we can build healthy and sustainable communities. Through Social Value pledges, our contractors and suppliers can provide support and opportunities for the people in our communities, which can make a difference in their lives.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we wanted to showcase how our Unlocking Social Value programme has helped provide apprenticeship opportunities that have helped young people and adults into employment.

Harrison Wass from Ashington, Northumberland was looking to get practical work experience that would complement his Level 2 Business Administration course at Newcastle College.

Through social value, drainage company Metro Rod were able to support Harrison with an Office Administrator apprenticeship that’s been perfect for him:

“I’ve been able learn customer service skills and make documents for Metro Rod. It’s been great to take what I’m learning and apply it to my work in the office.”

Amy Williamson, Office Manager at Metro Rod was full of praise for Harrison and the apprenticeship programme:

“Harrison brings fresh enthusiasm to the business and he’s so keen to learn. The apprenticeships give people the chance to further their education whilst still earning a living to support themselves.

“Harrison is now looking to start at Level 3 business administration course and he’ll continue his development whilst working at Metro Rod.”

Metro Rod are the not the only business who have been able to use social value donations to create apprenticeship opportunities:

  • Materials supplier Wolseley provided £10,000 of funding to support our internal trade apprenticeship programme. This programme helps train new trades people for the future and strengthens our team
  • Technical service provider Equans were able to provide a total of 441 weeks of work experience opportunities for three apprentices on site at our Athol House Development
  • Construction company T Manners & Sons were able to support Kennsee Robinson by employing him as a first-year apprentice bricklayer working for Buildroute whilst studying at Hartlepool college

You can find out more about our commitment to social value in our current Environmental, Social and Governance Report.
