New Start gives you real life work experience, with a real wage and the opportunity to boost your career.
Now in its fourth year, our New Start employability scheme has supported over 250 people from across the North East to find paid career starter placements.
We recently met up with residents from the North of Tyne area who have just started their New Start careers.

Laura Robinson from North Shields was looking to return to work after being a stay at home mum:
“I’ve not had a lot of opportunities recently. I’ve been a stay-at-home mum for three years. Now I’m looking to get back into work and New Start was a great stepping stone”
“The New Start team were friendly, they gave me lots of advice, helped me prepare for the interview and now I’ve got the job”

Grant Lewis Robb from Newcastle has started working as an Operations Assistant at Muckle LLP law firm:
“I always wanted to try a career in admin and the office environment. My background is in hospitality and customer service so it’s a change of pace.
“With it being a five month placement, it’s an opportunity to see what it’s like to work in a different environment and see if I can excel.
“After the five months I have a few options. Muckle may keep me on, and I can continue to work with them or I get the experience and hopefully a good reference from Muckle and find something similar. It’s a win-win.”
Rakhbarkhon Khamidullaeva moved here from Uzbekistan in Central Asia with her husband in 2023. Thanks to New Start she was able to get her first job working in the UK working as an Operations Assistant at Muckle LLP:
“I was planning on starting my career in administration, so this was the perfect role. Previously my background was in psychology. I didn’t have any experience in the UK.
“New Start helped me to develop my skills in admin and working in a team. They were really supportive.
“Muckle is a great place to work. I hope to be able to develop my career with them.”

Jonathan Walton from Walker is going to be helping adult with learning difficulties at the Ouseburn Farm charity:
“I’ve normally done roles in customer services and IT support. I’d never thought of going for this kind of work before. New Start encouraged me to consider it. My younger brother has learning difficulties so I‘ve got experience helping people in similar situations.
“The comprehensiveness of the New Start course really helped. There are so many job opportunities and there isn’t as much competition for the roles so it’s more comfortable and less intense. I’d recommend it to other people.”

Joshua Owen from North Shields found a role as a Debt Collector with Waters & Gate collection agency:
“The company presented a lot of benefits and it seemed like a really nice place to work. I got to meet some of the people who work there and they were all lovely.
“I recently got my ADHD medication which has helped me to take on role like this. I previously worked as a contractor as it was a role that kept me busy. Now that I can concentrate more, I can take on work like this.
“New Start helped me to look over all the roles available and show me how my experience was suitable. I’m hoping I can now get some great experience with this role and potentially a career.”

Bailie Nolan from North Shields found his first job through New Start as a Production Assistant at commercial printer NE Display:
“I knew college wasn’t for me. New Start seemed like a great way to get a job. They helped me to do my CV and my cover letter which I hadn’t done before. It’s a good chance to get experience and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Diana Gabriela Rosales moved to North Shields a few years ago and has been looking for a role that could help her develop her English-speaking skills as well as in customer service and administration:
“I have experience but not in this country. I managed to get a role in customer service at Letsmove estate agents. It gives me the chance to develop both my English speaking skills and get the experience I need to develop my career.
“The support from New Start was great. The people really believe in you and help you to believe in yourself. They gave me the support and encouragement to apply for roles.”
Whether you’re looking to find your first role, start a new career or get back into work after a break, New Start can help.
