Step into Driving: Michael’s journey back to employment

As part of National Employability Week, we wanted to share the inspiring story of Michael Dawson and his journey back into employment through the Step into Driving programme.

When Michael first contacted our Employment and Skills Team, he had been unemployed for a significant period of time and was facing financial difficulties. After seeing an advert for the Step into Driving programme, he called Employment and Skills Advisor Sean to find out more about the opportunity.

At that stage, Michael lacked confidence and was struggling to see a clear route back into employment. However, he was determined to make a change and took the first step by enquiring about the programme.

Building confidence and connections

Sean invited Michael to attend a 'Meet the Employer' event featuring local operators Stanley Travel and Nightingale Coaches. The event gave participants valuable insight into the bus driving industry, employer expectations and the opportunities available.

Michael was particularly impressed by Stanley Travel and quickly set his sights on building a career with the company.

He then enrolled on the Step into Driving course at Stanley Skills Hub. Throughout the training, Michael's confidence continued to grow as he developed new knowledge and skills alongside other learners.

Overcoming challenges

After completing the initial training programme and receiving the necessary licences, Michael progressed to the theory test stage.

Although he successfully passed most elements, he did not pass one part of the theory assessment on his first attempt. Rather than allowing this setback to discourage him, Michael remained committed to his goal.

With encouragement and support from Sean, the test was immediately rebooked, and Michael returned fully prepared. This time, he passed successfully, demonstrating resilience and determination.

A life-changing outcome

Today, Michael is employed by Stanley Travel and has successfully returned to work.

The transformation in him has been remarkable. From someone struggling with confidence and unemployment, he has become a valued employee earning a regular income and taking pride in his work.

Michael is now preparing to undertake training on larger buses, opening up further opportunities for progression within Stanley Travel and helping him build a long-term career in the transport sector.

Michael's story demonstrates the life-changing potential of the Step into Driving programme.

As Sean explains:

"The change in Michael from when he first came through the door to where he is now is extraordinary. He has gone from being out of work and lacking confidence to being proud of his achievements and fully employed. It's an excellent example of how the project can genuinely change somebody's life."

Step into Driving is a fully funded bus driver training programme delivered by Karbon Foundation, funded by North East Mayoral Strategic Authority (NEMSA)  and delivered in partnership with Durham Learn and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
