What is a Social Value Connector? A behind-the-scenes look at this community-focused role at Karbon

If you’re looking for a rewarding job supporting and improving our communities, then our Social Value Connector role could be right up your street.

But what is a Social Value Connector? We spoke to Jess Alexander, our Social Value Lead, to find out more.

Hi Jess, can you tells us what a Social Value Connector actually does on a day-to-day basis?

The role is all about helping us deliver real benefits to our communities. You’ll work closely with the contractors and suppliers we take on (our supply chain) to fulfil the commitments they made when they joined us. You’ll also team up with local community groups to match them with the right projects so the work we do together makes a real difference.

There’s a strong focus on working with others, but you’ll also help with admin tasks like tracking and recording the positive impact these projects have, so we can show the value they bring.

What kind of projects or activities might they get involved in?

The role is really varied, some days might be spent checking in with the supply chain to see how projects are going and make sure monitoring is up to date, some could be out meeting community partners to talk to them about their needs and how social value can support them and other days could be spent at events like school career fairs showcasing Karbon alongside our supply chain.

How does this role help support Karbon’s customers and communities?

The social value roles in the business are the ‘cogs’ to making sure our supply chain deliver the commitments they’ve pledged and that the opportunities they’ve created make a difference in our communities. We’ve spent a lot of time over the last year focussing our approach to social value so we can make the most impact, working with key partners in our communities – but there’s still lots more to do!

It's also an opportunity to work first hand with our supply chain to develop their awareness of social value and the needs of the communities they work in.

What kind of skills or qualities are you looking for in someone applying for this role?

Communication skills are key – the person needs to be able to communicate with lots of different partners and people. It is key that they understand how good communication can help build relationships and make sure we get the most from our social value work.

Good planning and organisational skills are essential as you’ll often be looking after several projects and contracts at the same time so being able to manage that is important to make sure that we get a good experience for both the contractor and the project or person they are working with.

What learning or support will they receive during their time with Karbon?

They’ll be supported by other members of the Social Value Team and work closely with the wider teams working in our communities – giving lots of opportunities for learning particularly around community investment and employability. Social value is key in procurement and contract management too so they’ll learn on the job where it fits into the processes around awarding and managing contracts too.
