Fire travels fast – why fire door safety matters more than ever

Fire Door Safety Week 2025 is all about one key message: fire spreads quickly. In an emergency, every second matters and a properly fitted fire door can help save lives.

This year’s campaign highlights how fire doors slow down the spread of flames and smoke. Whether you’re at home, at work, in a school or hospital, these doors are designed to hold back fire for up to 30 minutes. That extra time can make all the difference for people trying to escape and for firefighters trying to help.

But not all fire doors do the job properly. The British Woodworking Federation is asking everyone to:

  • Never wedge or prop them open

  • Check regularly for any damage or wear

How can you help?

It’s important you give us access to your home so we can carry out the necessary safety checks to all fire doors. We’ll write to you in advance and arrange a suitable date and time that is convenient to you.

We will undertake regular safety checks of communal doors in all blocks; however, it is a legal requirement that annual checks are undertaken to all flat entrance doors in buildings over 11 metres.

Remember these three simple fire door safety rules…

  1. When you go to bed shut your doors

  1. In the event of a fire, make sure all fire doors are closed

  1. If you think anything is wrong with a fire door, please report it to us by calling:

    • 0800 533 5442 if you are a Byker customer

    • 0808 164 0111 if you are a Karbon customer
