Take control of your bills this winter with our Money Matters service

As the colder months set in and our energy usage increases, staying on top of household bills can become a worry.

For those feeling an increasing financial pressure due to the cost-of-living, our Money Matters team is on hand to help – whether you have a specific concern, or just need some advice on how to manage your money.

Sarah Scott, a new customer to Karbon has praised the team for helping her to reduce various monthly bills, giving her peace of mind going into the winter.

On signing up for a new tenancy all new customers go through an affordability assessment and for those with limited disposable income after expenses, Money Matters get in touch to see what support they can offer.

The Money Matters team carried out an income and expenditure exercise to make sure Sarah was receiving all the benefits she is entitled to and assess her outgoings.

The evaluation showed that Sarah had a yearly income of around £17,005, meaning that an application to the Northumbrian Water Support Plus scheme could also be made. As a result, Sarah received a 50% discount on her water rates for the next two years.

A financial well-being session was also conducted to see if there were any other bills Sarah could be eligible for discounts on – which shed light on further areas to cut costs.

Working with the Money Matters team also gave Sarah the confidence to seek bill reductions for herself. Sarah contacted her broadband provider regarding a social tariff and as a result has halved her broadband bill.

Sarah also explained that she hadn’t received a gas bill from British Gas since moving into her home. The Money Matters team helped them to resolve this problem, but Sarah was liable for 3 months' worth of gas and electricity which she could not afford to pay.

The team helped Sarah arrange affordable payments to cover the bill, at a frequency that worked for her.

Sarah has complimented the Money Matters team and how smooth the process was:

“Karbon Homes rang me and explained how they could help me with my finances and outgoings.

“The team were amazing and made the whole process so simple and easy! They were very friendly too which helped.

“Saving money from my reduced bills means I can worry less about covering all my bills, and I’m able to spend more on my son too.”

Lee Forrest, Money Matters Manager at Karbon Homes, said: “As we move into a time of year where we often see customers struggle to manage their finances, it’s great that we can give them the confidence to take the lead with organising their money and outgoings.

“We’re still firmly in a cost-of-living crisis, and we cannot stress enough that the Money Matters team are on hand to help our customers with any financial concerns.”
